Proudly serving for over 80 years!
The Mullens Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served the citizens of Mullens and surrounding areas since 1938. The department continues to serve in more ways than traditional "firefighting". The MVFD was Wyoming County's first fire department to initiate an Advanced Life Support "Rapid-Response" EMS program, beginning in the 1990's. Now, in 2025, the MVFD first responders have the capabilities to transport the critically ill or injured patient without having to wait for lengthy EMS response times, improving the overall health and wellbeing of our community. Under the command of the current Fire Chief - Justin England, the MVFD boasts an ISO rating of 4. The Insurance Services Office, or ISO, evaluates all aspects of firefighting including staffing levels, equipment, training, water supply access, communication systems, and geographical distribution of services; and grades the department on a scale from 1 to 10, where a lower number indicates a better rating and a "1" is considered the best possible rating. A lower ISO score provides local home and bussiness owners with lower insurance premiums in the areas that the department serves.
The Mullens Fire Department was officially chartered in 1938 by the Fire Chief, Clyde Newsome. The current fire department is located in the heart of beautiful downtown Mullens, West Virginia. This building was constructed by firemen and various community members in 1959, with many additions over the years. With the continuing growth of call volume, membership, equipment, and other resources necessary for the protection of life and property, the department is outgrowing the current, outdated, and damaged building. The current building withstood the infamous flooding of 2001 and is now beginning to show signs of flood damage with noticeable structure cracking in the walls and floors of the building. We are actively seeking funding from various sources to begin construction of a new fire department.
The new fire station will be constructed on First Street in the beautiful downtown district. This new fire station will not only bring new construction to the town, it will also provide the members with updated facilities and allow for safe and secure storage of vital lifesaving equipment. The purchase of this property in 2023 was made possible by the West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, we thank Former Governor Justice for helping us achieve this major step. The MVFD has always been a staple of the Mullens community, hosting hot dog dinners, toy drives, and more. We wish to continue serving our community for many years to come.
In February 2025, our department was hit with another flooding disaster. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our amazing volunteers, and with the support of the City of Mullens, we were able to get our station and equipment back in service while still answering emergency calls and helping our community. We want to give a heartfelt thank you to the citizens of Mullens and our surrounding communities for the generous donations and support you showed us during this time. Your kindness truly made the difference in helping us recover.
